 Enrollment

The process begins with a parent orientation which includes a discussion of the Kumon method and your child's specific needs. A placement test is given to the child and the results are discussed. An individualized plan is made tailored specifically to your child's needs.

***The testing is free and there is no obligation to enroll.***

Center Times

Mondays: 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Thursdays: 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

A child that is enrolled in the program will come to the center twice a week. Center time takes about 30 - 45 minutes per subject. During center time, the child does his or her center assignment, all supplemental activities appropriate for the subject, returns completed homework, and receives the new daily homework assignments. The daily homework should take 10-15 minutes per subject.   The child meets with the instructor to review homework, check progress and set goals.

A Typical Class Day

1.    The first step for the student after arriving is to go to the check-in desk to turn in the completed homework. Each student receives a folder with new packets of homework as well as the class work.

2. If the Instructor has a note in the folder the student goes to see her.

3.  The student then goes to his/her assigned Instructor, finds a seat and begins the class work.

4.  Upon completion, the class work is turned in to the Instructor for grading. Any mistakes are corrected by the student and rechecked by the Instructor.

5.  Reading students will read aloud to the Instructor.  The student makes an entry in the Book Tracker and selects a new book from the Kumon Recommended Reading Library.  Math students depending on level will work on a magnetic number board, write in a numerical notebook, and do oral math facts with the Instructor.

6.  The student takes the completed class work to the Head Instructor. The Instructor and student will discuss any problems and set goals for the upcoming homework.

7.  The student returns the folder to the Check-In desk and is ready to leave.

Class Procedures and Policies

Class Attendance

On Center days your child will spend 30 - 45 minutes in class per subject. This time may vary depending on level, age, and worksheets assigned. Parents are responsible for their children once they leave the work room. There are no Kumon staff in the waiting area so please be present before the end of their center visit. Junior Kumon students make an appointment for their center visit. Late Junior Kumon students will only be taken if space permits. Regular Kumon students may come anytime between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Class attendance is a vital part of the Kumon program. Observing students at work in class assists greatly in the planning process for that student. We also prefer to introduce new concepts in class so we may assist your child in reaching his Kumon goals. If a student is unable to attend class, please call the Center by 10:00 a.m. the day of class. This will allow us the time to make adjustments to the student's plan and prepare the work to be picked up.

Kumon homework is assigned 365 days per year unless requested in writing one week prior to the date of adjustment. Parents should complete an "Absence Notification Form," available in the Parent Waiting area, at least one week prior to the absence. Please indicate the class days to be missed and any adjustments required for the student's work. We strongly encourage students to continue their Kumon study during vacations. All work will be prepared in advance and given to the student on his last center day before the vacation.

Absence Policy

A student who, for whatever reason, does not take any Kumon materials in a given month, but who plans to resume Kumon study within 2 months, is considered absent. An absent student is considered discontinued after two consecutive months of absence. If a discontinued student resumes Kumon study the registration fee will be charged and the student must take a placement test.

We welcome your feedback. Please feel free to ask questions and share concerns. Conferences may be scheduled anytime during the year.

Instructor Information

Since I will be working with your child, I would like to give you my background and how I came to be a Kumon instructor. My name is Carolyn Glass. I am married and have four children. My husband, Kevin, is an Electrical Engineer in the Telecommunications Industry. We have been living in San Antonio for nine years.

I did my undergraduate work in Biology at the University of Kansas and my graduate work in Nutrition at Rutger's University. I trained at the National Training Center to become a certified Kumon Instructor.

My first experience with Kumon was at the beginning of my oldest son's fifth grade year. He began having some difficulty in math. I realized his problems stemmed from not having a solid foundation in the basics of math. I had read articles about Kumon and decided to enroll him in the Kumon program. Kumon was just what he needed. It improved his math skills, but also increased his academic confidence and study skills.

My husband first suggested that I should become a Kumon Instructor. After giving it some very serious thought, I decided it would be the perfect job for me combining my high regard for the Kumon method with my love of working with children.

Kumon is a team effort. In order for the program to work, the student , parents and Instructor all have to work together. Please feel free to ask questions about any aspect of your child's progress. If it is a busy class day, I may ask if I can call you after class so that we can speak without interruption, but I do want to hear from you! I look forward to working with you and your child.
